Position Overview:

The Forest Productivity Cooperative (FPC) is seeking undergraduate research assistants to support data collection at FPC study sites across NC and beyond. Selected candidate(s) will primarily assist the Field Operations Manager with collecting tree measurements and soil/foliage samples at study sites in central and eastern NC; processing and archiving samples; and recording data. Work will primarily occur from mid-fall until mid-spring.

Depending on project needs and on the interests and proficiencies of the selected candidate(s), the research assistant role may also include data analysis/cleaning, soils analysis, and process automation/SOP development.

Mandatory Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate student enrolled in coursework at NCSU and eligible for federal work study

  • Availability to work at least one full day per week (M-F).

  • Experience working outdoors for extended periods, including navigating remote forested environments and working in varying field conditions such as heat, rain, rough terrain, and dense vegetation

  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and effectively while consistently adhering to established protocols.

  • Familiarity with digital data collection and navigation devices/software (e.g. Data Loggers, Avenza Maps, Field Maps, etc.) and at least intermediate proficiency in Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience driving 4-wheel-drive vehicles in rugged conditions 

  • Availability to work two full days per week (M-F)

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. 

  • Career interest related to loblolly pine plantation silviculture

  • Experience with data/cleaning analysis (including spatial data).
